Do you dare to feel?

Do you dare to feel?

As a coach, I regularly see how people get stuck in their thoughts, struggle to connect with their feelings, and sometimes feel like they are at a standstill. However, the ability to feel is essential for a healthy emotional well-being. This is not always easy, especially for introverts who tend to be in their heads a lot. Here are a few tips to overcome your obstacles.

"What in your body is asking for your attention right now? And what is it telling you?" I stand in socks on a slightly cold floor as the trainer asks me this. Last weekend, I participated in the first two days of body-oriented work based on Pesso. By now, I know that the little ache in my back has much more to tell me than I initially thought.

Like many of you, I also occasionally struggle to fully connect with my feelings. The first two days of this new training have broadened my perspective and made me realize even more how essential it is to dare to feel.

However, there can be things that stand in the way of this feeling. Here are a few examples of what I often encounter:

  1. Fear of rejection: Introverts often have a deep sense of self-worth and attach great importance to what others think of them. The fear of rejection can prevent you from expressing your true feelings. It's important to remember that your feelings are valid and reflect your authenticity. To overcome this fear, it's useful to ask yourself, "What is the worst that can happen if I share my feelings? And what if sharing my feelings leads to more understanding and connection?"

  2. Self-criticism: Many introverts tend to be strict judges of themselves. They are often perfectionists and set high standards for themselves. Self-criticism can make it difficult to allow yourself to be vulnerable and experience your feelings. Be aware of the inner critic and replace negative thoughts with self-compassion. Remember that it's okay to be human, and expressing your feelings is not a weakness but a sign of courage.

  3. Uncertainty about emotions: Some introverts feel uncertain about how to express or understand their emotions. They may fear that they can't articulate their feelings well or that others won't understand their emotions. It's important to acknowledge that emotions are complex, and it's not always necessary to perfectly understand or express them. Start with small steps, like naming simple emotions, and be patient with yourself as you learn to explore your emotional world.

  4. Losing yourself in thoughts: Introverts often have a rich inner world and can easily get entangled in thoughts. This can make it difficult to consciously connect with your feelings in the present moment. Mindfulness exercises and breathing techniques can be useful tools to help you return to the here and now. Take regular breaks, feel your breath, and become aware of your emotions.

It's not always easy to open yourself up to your feelings, but it's a crucial step toward self-discovery and personal growth. Remember that it's okay to be vulnerable, and sharing your feelings demonstrates strength, not weakness. Do you dare to feel?
