Why a different brain isn't a broken brain

Say you have ADHD. In the past, that was quickly seen as something "wrong" with your brain. But more and more people are looking at it differently. They say: my brain isn't broken, it just works differently. And that actually fits in nicely with what's been changing within psychiatry and psychology themselves in recent years. There too, people are increasingly saying: maybe we need to look at "abnormal" behaviour differently than we always have.

There are a number of ways in which scientists are doing this. I'll go through them, and each time show what they have to do with neurodiversity.

Not "sick or healthy", but a sliding scale

In the past, people often thought in boxes: you either have ADHD, or you don't. But more and more researchers are saying: it's not a box, it's a sliding scale. Everyone struggles a bit with, say, being easily distracted or having trouble sitting still. Some people just more than others.

That's exactly how people with ADHD or autism often see it themselves too: not as "I have it or I don't", but as a spectrum on which everyone falls somewhere. A diagnosis, then, isn't the discovery of a hidden illness, but more a way of saying: "Here, at this point on the line, you're entitled to help or accommodations."

Not one single cause

In the old disease model, you search for the cause: the one disorder that causes all the problems. But what if there's no separate, hidden cause at all, and the symptoms simply influence each other?

Think of someone with ADHD: poor sleep leads to less concentration, less concentration leads to stress, and stress leads to worse sleep again. That's a loop of things keeping each other going. You don't need to believe in one secret "ADHD switch" in the brain to understand why these symptoms occur together and keep persisting. That also changes how you look at it: not "remove the disease", but "look at where you can break the loop".

Everyone is "different" in their own way

A well-known saying in the neurodiversity world is: "If you've met one autistic person, you've met... one autistic person." Because two people with the same diagnosis can differ enormously from each other.

Within science too, there's growing recognition that thinking too much in terms of group averages easily overlooks the differences between people with the same diagnosis. Instead of asking "Does this person fit the autism box?", the question becomes: "What is this specific person's story, with their own life and environment?"

Not just explaining, but above all understanding

The last, and perhaps most important, point: a diagnosis is not hard proof that "something is wrong with your brain". It's more a way of describing someone's experience, and that experience depends heavily on the environment someone lives in.

That's precisely the core of neurodiversity. Many of the problems people with ADHD or autism experience don't simply come from their brain itself, but arise because the world is set up for people without those traits. A classroom full of stimuli, or an office with no quiet space, can sometimes make life harder than the brain itself does. Understanding, then, means listening to what someone actually needs, rather than deciding from the outside what's "wrong".

Not a black-and-white story

This doesn't mean we should never treat anything anymore, or that everyone has to see their ADHD or autism as something beautiful. Some people experience real distress from their brain and would very much like help with that, and that deserves just as much room. Some people even find it a bit uncomfortable when their serious struggles get brushed aside as "just being different", while they're getting stuck every single day.

So the main message is that there are several, scientifically well-founded ways of looking at a different brain, and that neurodiversity fits in nicely with them. From boxes to a sliding scale. From one secret cause to a whole bunch of things that are connected. From averages to one person's story. And from just explaining to also truly understanding.
